A heat island effect is  is essentially a strong, stationary area of high pressure that traps hot air near the surface, leading to prolonged periods of excessive heat and humidity. For example, cities experience higher temperatures than surrounding rural areas due to the replacement of natural surfaces with heat-absorbing materials like pavement and buildings.

These events are becoming increasingly common and intense due to climate change.
